DIVING IN & ASKING

WE WANTED TO HELP

We discussed how important it is to research and have information before decisions are made and things actioned.

All Cape Kids researched the pests thoroughly. They are now very knowledgeable.

WE MADE A PLAN

Our first thing to do in our Action Plan was to set up a system of tracking pests to check what could be  causing a problem in our school.

Tracking Tunnels were the first things we set-up with Tamsin's help.

Our school grounds are beautiful and we noticed there are very, very few native birds.  We have seen a kereru once and one tui visits each spring.  We decided we needed to  "Bring the Birds Back" to school.

We Researched Pests

We Researched Pests

We needed to know what pests and predators there were in our area and Tamsin guided us in the right direction. We shared our information.

Knowledge of Predators

Knowledge of Predators

Once we knew what pests and predators we had in our area that could attack birds and their eggs - we knew what to look for. We discussed hedgehogs as they are good for our garden areas and also cats because we have cat lovers in our group.

Knowing Our Environment

Knowing Our Environment

As a group we had several walks around our school getting to know where birds may come to and where pests and predators may live.

Investigation Time

Investigation Time

Our brains were in gear as we searched for a variety of good spots to locate our tracking tunnels. We needed to know what was actually happening in our environment.

Locating Tunnel Stations

Locating Tunnel Stations

Our next challenge was to find the best spots for our tracking tunnels.

Exploring New Things

Exploring New Things

Part of our learning was to try new things and learn new skills. Tamsin introduced us to tracking cards to go in the stations.
